ESET researchers have discovered two new Linux backdoors, WolfsBane and FireWood, used for cyberespionage. These tools target system information, user credentials, and specific files, evading detection for prolonged periods. WolfsBane originates from China-aligned APT group, Gelsemium. It was found in Taiwan, the Philippines, and Singapore. FireWood, potentially linked to multiple China-aligned APT groups, has been observed since 2005. ESET emphasises the growing trend of APT groups using Linux malware due to improvements in Windows security.
