Researchers set out roadmap to restore trust in big data for health science

International researchers are calling for increased transparency and effective governance frameworks for the use of personal health information following recent data harvesting scandals. Programmes such as the 100,000 Genomes Project and the US Cancer Moonshot could be undermined by controversies such as Cambridge Analytica and Facebook. The researchers propose a “roadmap” to restore confidence, including a clear social contract and ethical rigour. They also suggest the creation of “data safe havens” with public “shop-windows” to demonstrate how data is being used.
