Researchers hack electronic shifters with a few hundred dollars of hardware

Researchers from UC San Diego and Northeastern University have presented a technique which would allow potential saboteurs to hack wireless cycle gear-shifting systems and force unexpected gear shifts or lock bikes into an incorrect gear, which they contend could be applied from as far as 30 feet away using only a few hundred dollars worth of hardware. The technique was demonstrated at this week’s Usenix Security Symposium.
