In August, Floridian Debbie King contracted a potentially fatal infection, Vibrio vulnificus, a bacterium found in warm coastal waters, from a small cut on her shin. Despite the rarity of the disease, with around 150-200 cases reported annually in the US, scientists fear that warmer waters due to climate change and a growing elderly population could cause the number of infections to double by 2060.
