Ransomware still evolving, but paying hackers is still the wrong idea

Ransomware attacks on the healthcare industry are growing in sophistication, with EHR-giant Allscripts and several hospitals suffering disruptions this month alone. Despite this, experts warn against paying the hackers. There is no guarantee that the files will be returned, and organizations that pay are added to dark web lists of companies that pay ransom, making them vulnerable to future attacks. The burden of proof is also on the provider to show that data was not breached during an attack. It is essential for organizations to have an incident response and downtime procedure in place to mitigate the effects of a potential attack.
