Ransomware payments saw their biggest ever drop in H2 2024, according to Chainalysis. The level of payments varied significantly year to year, with 2022 seeing a marked decrease to $655m compared to $1.07bn in 2021 and nearly $1bn in 2020. In 2023, payments surged back to $1.25bn. Researchers warned reliable figures are challenging due to factors including attackers inflating figures, victims not coming forward, and the stigma around ransomware.
