Ransomware hits healthcare, critical services in January

Major ransomware attacks in January targeted healthcare entities, including the New York Blood Center (NYBC) and Maryland’s Frederick Health. As a result, some appointments were rescheduled and services were delayed. Simultaneously, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center reported a data breach affecting over half a million individuals. However, blockchain analysis firm Chainalysis noted a 35% decrease in ransom payments in 2024, attributing it to law enforcement action and victims’ increasing refusal to pay.
