Cybersecurity incidents between 2019 and 2023 cost small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) almost $4bn according to a NetDiligence report, with ransomware and business email compromise the main causes. The most afflicted SME sectors were professional services, manufacturing, financial services, retail, and healthcare; the latter’s average cyber-incident cost was the highest at $261,000. While SMEs made up 98% of the total claims, they only represented 49% of the total loss. Larger firms averaged interruption costs of $26m.
