Cyberattacks, particularly ransomware, are increasing across the Middle East and Africa (MEA), with geopolitical tensions fuelling the rise. South Africa witnessed a surge in attacks with 78% of companies hit by ransomware in 2023, up from 51% in 2022. The United Arab Emirates saw 70% fewer attacks in 2022 due to greater international cooperation. Two-thirds of all attacks target Israel, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, or Jordan. Ransomware groups largely operate out of Russia, emphasising regional complexities.
