Vladimir Putin-backed criminal gangs, as well as operatives backed by Iran and North Korea pose a cyberthreat to the UK’s “critical national infrastructure,” warned security consultant Martin Riley, adding that ransomware attacks on critical services could threaten public safety and cause loss of life. Bridewell’s research shows cuts in cyber defence budgets for sectors like government, finance, transport and utilities, and a 62% increase in attacks on the UK’s critical national infrastructure from 2022 to 2023.
