UK Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden has flagged the risk from cyber criminals sanctioned by Russia, Iran, and North Korea, potentially targeting critical national infrastructure. Security consultant Martin Riley warns that ransomware attacks could generate substantial impacts, including threatening public safety and potentially causing loss of life. Riley urges greater investment in cybersecurity, noting a decrease in cyber defence budgets and a 62% increase in attacks on critical infrastructure in 2022-2023. Earlier this month, a government report highlighted the UK’s vulnerability to a large-scale ransomware attack.
