Criminal gangs, potentially backed by Russia, Iran, and North Korea, are a significant threat to the UK’s national infrastructure, warned security consultant Martin Riley. Speaking after Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden highlighted the risks of cybercrime, Riley said ransomware attacks could have a catastrophic impact on public safety. He also raised concerns over a lack of investment in cybersecurity, with research showing cuts to over two-thirds of defence budgets in key sectors. Consequently, Riley called for a more strategic, long-term approach to combating such threats.
