Security expert Martin Riley has warned that Russia, Iran, and North Korea may use criminal gangs to launch devastating ransomware attacks on the UK’s critical national infrastructure, threatening public safety and potentially causing loss of life. A reduction of cyber defense budgets for key organizations and a shortage of cyber skills in the UK were emphasized as concerning issues. Parliament’s Joint Committee on the National Security Strategy suggested the responsibility for tackling ransomware attacks be transferred to the Cabinet Office and overseen directly by Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden.
