Prenatal Supplement Labels Not Always Accurate: U.S. Report

A Government Accountability Office report has found that many over-the-counter prenatal supplements are inaccurately labelled with regards to their nutrient content. Of 12 supplements tested, 11 had at least one nutrient level that was above or below the levels stated on the label. The report recommended Congress strengthen the FDA’s oversight of dietary supplements. It revealed one product may cause a potential health risk due to a high level of folic acid, based on established standards.
