Pets Really Can Be Like Human Family

Many pet owners treat their animals as part of the family, spending billions on pet care, but societal norms often discourage expressions of love and grief for pets. A majority in a Pew survey, even pet owners, said there was too much emphasis on pets’ well-being. Most housing restricts pets, pet insurance is rare, and animal bereavement leave is often dismissed as a joke. While some argue that treating pets as family members trivialises human parenthood, many argue it is a deeply meaningful form of caregiving.
