Orange Spain Outage: BGP Traffic Hijacked by Threat Actor

On January 3, 2024, Orange Spain suffered a significant internet outage after a threat actor known as ‘Snow’ exploited weaknesses in its RIPE account. The actor modified the autonomous system (AS) number linked to the company’s IP addresses and activated an invalid Resource Public Key Infrastructure (RPKI) configuration, which disrupted internet announcements. The company reassured no client data was compromised. The incident accentuates the importance of cybersecurity measures such as multi-factor authentication and robust RPKI.
