One of the biggest data breaches ever leaks details on billions of users — here’s what we know so far

A class action lawsuit claims that National Public Data, a background check company, exposed the personal data of 2.9 billion people via a data breach resulting in the information being sold on the dark web. The company is accused of negligence, breaches of fiduciary duty and unjust enrichment. The plaintiffs want the company to purge all affected personal data, encrypt future data and undergo annual cybersecurity checks.
