ONC Deputy: Info blocking will lead to OIG audits and potential fines

The bipartisan drafted 21st Century Cures Act mandates the US Department of Health and Human Services Office of the National Coordinator to outline guidance for info blocking and interoperability, which is expected to be rolled out this year. Health organizations can expect to be audited and fined if they are found to be info blocking. Issues with fees associated with connecting information systems and misinterpretations of HIPAA are some reasons for info blocking. It is important for organizations to have a grasp on governance and be able to explain the rationale behind their actions.
