OCR Reports to Congress on HIPAA Compliance and Data Breaches

In its annual report for 2022, the Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights (OCR) reported that large data breaches under HIPAA regulations increased 107% since 2018. Complaints regarding potential HIPAA violations rose by 17% over the same period. OCR noted that there was a decreased budget and increased constraint on resources, hampering their ability to investigate breaches and potential violations.
