Chinese state-backed operation Salt Typhoon is targeting Southeast Asian telecoms and government bodies in a prolonged cyberespionage drive, using a new modular backdoor (GhostSpider) and the Demodex rootkit. Network access is achieved through exploiting multiple VPN and firewall systems, following which backdoors are deployed. Cybersecurity firm Trend Micro encourages improved cyber defenses in response to Salt Typhoon’s extensive toolset.
