The US Justice Department has indicted Russian national Evgenii Ptitsyn for operating a four-year cybercriminal campaign using a ransomware variant called “Phobos”. The campaign targeted various entities, including corporations, schools, and nonprofits, extorting at least $16 million. The indictment debunks the belief that only large firms are targeted, with one victim being a small healthcare provider in Maryland. Ptitsyn, extradited from South Korea, now faces numerous charges including wire fraud and computer fraud.
