The NHS has asked people in England to donate blood, as stocks are low following high demand over Christmas. Hospital demand exceeded collections by nearly 3,000 units from 24 December 2024 to 1 January 2025. The demand for O negative blood, which is safe to give to anyone in an emergency, outstripped collections by over 900 units, leading to an urgent call for donations. The NHS also urged donors of Black heritage to donate blood for patients with sickle cell disease who require ethnically matched blood.
