Blood stocks in the UK are running critically low, with under 800,000 people maintaining England’s blood supply in the past year, according to the NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT). The NHSBT issued an “amber alert” last year and stated that another million donors are required to meet demand. There is a crucial need for O negative blood, the universal blood type used in emergencies, and for more black donors who can help treat people with sickle cell disease.
