NHS appeals to military veterans to assist with blood shortage after cyber attack

The NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) has issued a second amber alert due to low blood stocks, attributing the shortage to staff shortages and reduced donor numbers following the 2017 system changes. Current figures reflect a decrease in active donors from 850,000 to 800,000 since the changes were made. Health Secretary Wes Streeting expressed concern regarding shortages of O- blood, advocating for changes to the NHS app to store blood type data and facilitate targeted appeals for specific blood types when stock levels are low.
