South Africa’s National Health Insurance (NHI) scheme is facing a significant cybersecurity challenge as it seeks to centralise electronic health records (EHRs). Calin Cloete, Enterprise Security Solutions Lead at ESET Southern Africa, said the NHI had to implement robust safeguards to protect the personal and medical data of millions. Cloete stressed that cybersecurity needed to be built into the EHR system from the outset and should involve a zero-trust approach, emphasising verification, multifactor authentication and role-based access control.
