New York adopts cybersecurity regulations for general hospitals

On October 2, 2024, the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) implemented hospital cybersecurity regulations. These mandate general hospitals in the state to establish a risk-based cybersecurity program, maintain system records, assign a Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), report cybersecurity incidents to NYSDOH within 72 hours, and use multi-factor authentication (MFA) controls. The regulations are part of the New York State Cybersecurity Strategy, outlined in November 2023. Hospitals have until October 2, 2025, to comply with most new requirements.
