MIT researchers have developed a handheld microscopic device capable of capturing and manipulating particles using a beam of light from a silicon-photonics chip. The technology can trap and “tweeze” cells within sterile coverslips, and could be a game-changer for biological experiments and DNA research. In a study, the team demonstrated they could control microparticles without significant harm to the living cells.
