A recent study on Lyme borreliosis (LB) found that the persistence of symptoms is often unrelated to infection by the pathogen Borrelia burgdorferi, that causes the disease. Instead, factors contributing to symptom persistence included poorer physical and social functioning, higher anxiety and depression, and negative illness perceptions. Furthermore, there was no evidence to support the disease’s cause as a factor in symptom persistence.
