The University of Connecticut Health has discovered that a newly identified protein, C1QL1, promotes the replacement of cells that produce myelin, the protective coating on nerve cells damaged by multiple sclerosis and other demyelinating diseases. Increased expression of C1QL1 has resulted in enhanced myelin production in experimental mice, indicating that therapies boosting C1QL1 could potentially treat demyelinating diseases.
