New HIPAA Security Rules Pull No Punches

A comprehensive revamp of healthcare cybersecurity will begin in 2025, obligated by US Department of Health and Human Services’ new Security Rule update. The revision places a substantial compliance burden on healthcare organizations. The changes include enhanced requirements for providers and plans and aim to address the increased threat of electronic protected health information breaches, which have surged 102% from 2018 to 2023, mainly due to ransomware attacks. The update plans to eliminate the previous allowance for flexibility in compliance based on individual circumstances.
