New HIPAA Security Rule Would Boost Healthcare Cybersecurity

The HIPAA Security Rule could be updated for the first time since 2013 to include new cybersecurity requirements for entities handling patient data. The update, requiring multi-factor authentication, encryption, and network segmentation, aims to strengthen healthcare data security following a surge in breaches and ransomware attacks. The proposed changes, estimated to cost over $30 billion over five years, also introduce requirements for risk assessments, incident responses, and regular testing and updating.
