Neurons Disrupt Metabolism Following Spinal Cord Injury

Researchers at the Ohio State University College of Medicine have found that conditions like diabetes and vascular diseases, common in individuals with spinal cord injuries, can be traced to abnormal neuronal activity post-injury. This activity leads to a leakage and pooling of abdominal fat tissue compounds in the liver and other organs. Short term use of the drug gabapentin was found to prevent these damaging metabolic effects.
