Florida-based data broker, National Public Data, has shut down after a breach exposed nearly three billion personal records. Its sister firm, recordscheck.net, also closed. The companies’ parent, Jerico Pictures, faces multiple lawsuits over the breach. The hacker reportedly offered the data for sale for $3.5 million on the dark web, but it also leaked online. The hacker was arrested in Brazil. The breach has increased scrutiny on data brokers, which collect and sell personal data.
