MSU study: Ransomware drives US health data breaches

A study led by Michigan State, Yale, and Johns Hopkins university researchers reveals that ransomware attacks have become the main driver of healthcare data breaches in the US, having affected about 285 million patient records over 15 years. Despite being just 11% of breaches by number in 2024, these attacks were responsible for 69% of all patient records affected that year. The researchers recommend several measures to curb future threats.
