The number of high school students termed “hall walkers” who skip class and have lower grades has increased since the pandemic, bringing to light a crisis in education. A report by Education Canada suggests learning ‘essentially stalled during the pandemic’, mostly affecting low-income students. The emotional health of children is also a concern with a report showing a decline in students’ mental health to 61% in 2022 compared 73% in 2019. Additionally, school staffing and mental health support were strained with 59% of Ontario students saying they feel ‘depressed about the future’ because of the pandemic.
