Microsoft to Phase Out NTLM in Favor of Kerberos for Stronger Authentication

Microsoft has announced plans to phase out NT LAN Manager (NTLM) in Windows 11, focusing on improving the Kerberos authentication protocol instead. The shift will include new features like Initial and Pass Through Authentication Using Kerberos (IAKerb) and a local Key Distribution Center for Kerberos. The transition aims to bolster security and reduce reliance on NTLM, which has inherent vulnerabilities and has been susceptible to relay attacks.
