Microsoft is set to introduce Efficiency Mode in Microsoft Teams, a performance-enhancing feature designed to improve app responsiveness and meeting quality on hardware-constrained devices.

The rollout begins in early May 2026 and is expected to be completed by mid-May 2026, with the feature linked to Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 560055.

Efficiency Mode is a performance-optimized experience built specifically for devices with limited CPU and memory resources. Rather than delivering a one-size-fits-all experience, Teams will now dynamically adjust its resource usage based on the capabilities of the underlying hardware.

The goal is to ensure that users on older or lower-spec machines still experience a smooth, responsive Teams environment without compromising core functionality.

How the Feature Works

When Efficiency Mode is active, Teams makes several automatic adjustments to reduce system load:

Dynamic video resolution: The resolution of the user’s outgoing camera feed is automatically adjusted during meetings, reducing bandwidth and processing demand.

Optimized app launch: Teams opens without a pre-selected chat, displaying a static image in the message pane to minimize initial resource consumption.

Visual indicator: An Efficiency Mode icon appears in the Teams app title bar, clearly signaling when the feature is active.

The feature is enabled by default on eligible devices, meaning users on hardware-constrained machines will benefit from it immediately without any manual configuration.

Users who prefer the standard Teams experience or do not require the performance adjustments can disable the feature. To opt out, navigate to Settings > General and select “Never use efficiency mode.”

Microsoft notes that no compliance considerations are associated with this feature, as users retain full individual control over enabling or disabling it.

For IT teams and helpdesk professionals, Microsoft recommends taking the following preparatory steps:

No action is required if the default behavior aligns with organizational needs.

Inform helpdesk staff about the new mode and the available opt-out process to address incoming user queries.

Update internal documentation to reflect the new setting and its impact on Teams behavior.

Efficiency Mode applies to Microsoft Teams for Windows desktop and Microsoft Teams for Mac desktop. The worldwide general availability rollout begins in early May 2026 and is expected to be completed by mid-May 2026.
