Meta Fined €251 Million for 2018 Data Breach Impacting 29 Million Accounts

Meta Platforms, Facebook’s parent company, has been fined €251m ($263m) by the Irish Data Protection Commission over a 2018 data breach that affected millions, including 3 million in the EU and EEA. The breach resulted from a bug that allowed unknown attackers to use the ‘View As’ feature to gain access to users’ personal information. In addition, Meta has agreed to a $31.5m payment program to settle with the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner over the misuse of users’ data in the Cambridge Analytica scandal.
