Marine snail venom may inspire new diabetes and hormone disorder treatments

A potentially potent treatment for diabetes and hormone disorders has been identified within the venom of the highly venomous cone snail by scientists from the University of Utah. The venom component, called consomatin, mimics the human hormone somatostatin which regulates blood sugar and hormone levels. The toxin’s specificity and stability offer a promising basis for designing more effective drugs for diabetes and hormone disorders.
