Managing the “opportunistic invasive” fungal pathogens

Invasive fungal infections are a rising global health risk, resulting in almost four million deaths a year and potentially being underreported. WHO has released a list of priority fungal pathogens that require urgent attention. Treatments often match those for bacterial infections and carrying out a diagnosis can currently be difficult. Antifungal treatments are typically toxic and not always effective, with drug-resistant strains becoming more common. Although pandemics from fungal pathogens are unlikely, humans are ill-prepared to handle such a threat.
