Malware ‘Meal Kits’ Serve Up No-Fuss RAT Attacks

The availability of cheap malware “meal kits” has resulted in an increase in campaigns using remote access Trojans (RATs), particularly those embedded in Excel and PowerPoint files, according to HP Wolf Security’s Q3 2023 Threat Insights Report. The report identified a significant spike in the number of Excel files infected with the Parallax RAT. Most of the threats observed in the quarter were email-based, and some cybercriminals were targeting inexperienced attackers. The report also identified a uptick in other RAT campaigns, such as Houdini.
