Cybersecurity firm Check Point has discovered a new variant of malware targeting Mac devices, named BanShee. The malware as a service operates by stealing credentials from browsers, cryptocurrency wallets, and sensitive data. Originally using macOS browser extensions, it now uses phishing websites and fake repositories. It also stealthily ‘borrows’ from Apple’s own encryption algorithm, causing antivirus programmes to miss it. Users can protect themselves with strong antivirus software, being cautious with downloads, ensuring software is up to date, using strong passwords, and two-factor authentication.
