Researchers at Morphisec Threat Labs have found and blocked various forms of Lua malware that target educational institutions. The malware attacks exploit the popularity of Lua-based gaming engine supplements, specifically used by students. The malware is disseminated through an installer or a ZIP archive usually masked as game cheats or other gaming tools. When a user downloads the infected file, it communicates with a Command and Control server, which responds with tasks. The ultimate aim of the malware is to deploy infostealers.
