Losing in Love: The $1 billion Romance Scam Industry

Loneliness and depression around Valentine’s Day can make people more vulnerable to online romance scams, and older people are particularly at risk due to social isolation and cognitive decline. In these scams, cyber criminals form an emotional bond with their victim, request financial assistance for a fictitious hardship, and continue to exploit the victim until the scam is realised. AI is being used to create synthetic identities. Awareness and educating vulnerable people is important in preventing these scams.
