British Columbia doctor Katarina Wind promotes a treatment system termed ‘weight-inclusive care’. Instead of encouraging a focus on weight loss or gain, she encourages healthy behaviours. The change of perspective came after battling her own eating disorder and realising traditional weight management treatments actually promote disorderly behaviour. Wind promotes ‘additive behaviours’, such as eating at least three meals a day, avoiding dietary restrictions and pairing sugary snacks with fat or protein. She bases her recommendations on the belief that medical care should be personalised to the individual.
