A study published in Nature Human Behaviour analysed the link between loneliness and health, finding consistent evidence of an elevated risk of 13 illness categories, including mental and behavioural problems, and diseases of the nervous and endocrine systems. However, Mendelian randomization analysis suggested these correlations were not causal. This suggests that loneliness may be a proxy marker rather than a direct risk factor for these illnesses.
