Law and Order or Bystander Safety? Police Chases Spotlight California’s Competing Priorities

California Governor Gavin Newsom wants Oakland to allow its police to chase more suspects. Greater freedom, he said, could quell rising crime rates, but critics say that such pursuits often lead to injuries and deaths among innocent bystanders. In 2022, more than 400 people were hurt in the 12,000 police chases in California, and five died. In 2020, an estimated 500 people died in police pursuits across the US.
