The recent ransomware attack on the Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center highlighted the role of human error in health data security. Locky, a new type of ransomware, preys on human instincts by disguising itself as a Microsoft Word invoice and encrypting valuable files. Although payment may result in release of the files, protection against ransomware is difficult as people are instinctively curious and will click on suspicious emails. Institutions should implement a security system to weed out suspicious activity, but more attacks are expected as criminals are financially motivated.
