Johnson embraces deficit fight, setting up battle over Medicare, Social Security

Democrats and progressive groups are focusing on Speaker Mike Johnson’s past support for massive cuts to entitlements, including his time as chairman of the Republican Study Commission. Echoing President Biden’s State of the Union attack on Republicans for wanting to cut these programs, these groups point to Johnson’s plans to establish a bipartisan debt commission as a potential threat to Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. Johnson maintains that the national debt is the “greatest threat to our national security”. His budget proposals have included raising eligibility ages and significant funding cuts.
