Is It Time to Worry About BA.2.86?

The SARS-CoV-2 variant BA.2.86, descended from Omicron, has 34 mutations and has been detected in 15 cases across six countries. With reduced COVID surveillance worldwide, it could spread unnoticed, but health experts believe that the collective immunity from previous infection and vaccination will buffer against the virus’ spread. Future possibilities for BA.2.86 range from causing a global surge like Omicron, becoming more transmissible but not causing a surge, or fizzling out and disappearing. Its future will become clearer in the next few weeks.
